Jayce Talis has become the latest unwilling participant in social media's favorite pastime: reducing complex public figures to a punchline.
Over the last several weeks, fans have adopted the phrase "Jaybe? Jaybe Not," alongside profile pictures and reaction images questioning everything from his judgment to his moral character. The trend has ranged from affectionate teasing to outright criticism, often focusing on decisions he made during Piltover's most turbulent years.
Talis, for his part, has clearly seen the posts.
"I wish I hadn't," he admitted during a recent interview, burying his face in his hands for several seconds before continuing. "Do you know how difficult it is to be confronted with a thousand strangers debating whether you're a fundamentally good person before breakfast?"
The inventor paused.
"Actually, don't answer that."
While visibly uncomfortable discussing the trend, Talis resisted suggestions that he should simply ignore it.
"I understand why people have questions about my decisions," he said. "There are decisions I question myself. But some of these posts make it sound as though I woke up every morning asking, 'How can I make the worst possible choice today?'"
He shook his head.
"That's not fair. Ineffective choice? Perhaps. Catastrophically misguided choice? On occasion. But never malicious."
Asked whether the criticism bothers him, Talis hesitated. "Of course it does. And I wish there was a way to take some of it back.”
Being Prepared
Unlike many public figures, Talis appears constitutionally incapable of pretending criticism doesn't affect him.
Throughout the interview, he repeatedly attempted to explain the reasoning behind past decisions, even when nobody directly challenged him.
For example, when asked what he thought of the profile picture trend, he somehow spent six minutes discussing the ethical responsibilities of scientists.
"I feel like people forget the context," he said. "We were trying to solve impossible problems under impossible circumstances. Every option seemed terrible. Sometimes I pick the wrong terrible option."
At one point, Talis produced a thick sheaf of handwritten notes.
"What are those?" we asked.
"Potential counterarguments."
"To what?"
"Everything."
When informed that most people participating in the trend were joking, Talis appeared briefly relieved, then concerned. "Wait. Are you sure?"
For a moment, the expression was less renowned inventor, Councilor, and Defender of Tomorrow’ and more local man discovering he may have spent several sleepless nights arguing with an inside joke.
Room for Disagreement
Not everyone is convinced.
Critics argue that Talis consistently overestimated his ability to control outcomes and underestimated the consequences of his actions. Some fans have suggested that the 'Jaybe? Jaybe Not' trend exists precisely because his legacy remains so divisive.
Presented with that argument, Talis nodded. "That's reasonable."
He then spent the next four minutes attempting to rebut it.
"Look, redemption isn't something you declare for yourself. Other people decide whether you've earned it. But I'd like to think that trying matters. Isn't it worse when someone never questions themselves? When someone refuses to admit they were wrong? What if—[cut for length]."
He stopped and sighed.
"Can you at least include that I was trying?"
Our View
The remarkable thing about Jayce Talis is that, despite all the criticism he receives, he has never stopped standing by the people he cares about.
The internet's favorite version of Jayce is a well-meaning disaster: brilliant, impulsive, and frequently in over his head. There is some truth to that. But reducing him to his mistakes overlooks what motivated many of his most controversial decisions in the first place. Again and again, Jayce chose loyalty over convenience. He risked his reputation, career, and livelihood to support those he believed in, particularly when they needed him most.
Speaking with him, it becomes clear that this loyalty remains central to who he is. Talis is remarkably easy to root for, not because he claims to have all the answers, but because he plainly doesn’t and is eager to learn. He argues with himself nearly as often as his critics do. He overprepares, overexplains, and occasionally talks himself into entirely new concerns halfway through a sentence.
And yet there is an unmistakable sincerity to him that makes these flaws fade to the background. He does not claim to be perfect, nor does he deny the consequences of his actions. Instead, he returns repeatedly to the people he was trying to protect.
Whether one agrees with every choice he made is another matter. What seems undeniable is that he never stopped fighting for the people he loved—and there is something admirable in that.

When told he would have to wait and read it like everyone else, he looked briefly horrified.
